Who can be hypnotised?

Generally most people, if they want to can be hypnotised. However some are more responsive to Hypnotherapy than others.  Stage Hypnotists are looking for 4% of the population who are very susceptible to complete their acts.  People with brain damage are usually not accepted by a Hypnotherapist.  People who have a mental illness or on strong drugs or are under the influence of alcohol or drugs can be very difficult to Hypnotise with beneficial responses to therapy.  However alcoholics and drug addicts who have come off the alcohol/drugs can be helped to overcome the withdrawal symptoms and low self esteem and confidence.

How does Hypnosis work?

In a Hypnotherapy session when a state of total relaxation (guided by the Hypnotherapist) is reached, the subconscious or inner mind becomes very susceptible to suggestion. It is then that the Hypnotherapist makes carefully thought out suggestions which are only accepted if the client’s mind deems them acceptable and morally right.  The subconscious then accepts the suggestions as a new reality which in turn influences the conscious mind in everyday life.

Can I get stuck in hypnosis?

NO.... The hypnotherapy session can be terminated any time you wish.  However you are so relaxed you will find you do not want to leave that state of relaxation.  If a fire alarm went off your subconscious mind would realise this and wake you up.  I the Hypnotherapist left the room for any length of time your inner mind would realise that there was nobody guiding you through the session and you would either wake up or fall into a sleep and wake up naturally.

What about giving away secrets?

If you are questioned about something you do not wish to reveal, you will not. You will always be in control of what you may say.

Can I be made to do something I don’t want to do?

NO.... You will not do anything which is against your code of morality. It is also not possible to hypnotise you against your will.  If you are a female attending a male Hypnotherapist and feel vulnerable you may bring a friend and tell the therapist of your concerns and ask if they may be present.

Will I remember what the Hypnotherapist said during the session?

Most Hypnotherapists start by talking you through a physical relaxation followed by a deepening procedure using guided imagery.  At this point you will feel totally relaxed and your subconscious mind becomes susceptible to suggestion.  The Hypnotherapist will then guide you through imagery and suggestive scripts which are designed to re program your subconscious mind to help you overcome your problems or change your behaviour to better your life.  Naturally, our conscious mind can “Day-dream” many times during a day and this can also happen during a session of therapy.  When day-dreaming a person will often not be able to remember afterwards.  This can also happen during a Hypnotherapy session, however the subconscious is still aware of what the Hypnotherapist is saying.  Some people will consciously remember everything others will remember bits and some, I find, are unable to remember anything except the initial relaxation procedure.

Is Hypnotherapy dangerous?

NO...  But Hypnotherapy must only be practised by a fully trained person.  During Hypnotherapy the subconscious mind is influenced to overcome any problems you may have.  The Hypnotherapy scripts are professionally worded to have a beneficial effect.

Is Hypnotherapy medically approved?

YES....  The American Medical Association (1958) and the American Psychiatric Association (1962) recognise Hypnotherapy and approved its use by professionally approved Hypnotherapists.  The British Medical Association (1955) also recognises Hypnotherapy as a viable therapeutic tool.

How many sessions will I need?

The success of a Hypnotherapy session depends upon a number of factors i.e. - the skill of the Hypnotherapist in relaxing you – How susceptible to relaxation you are – How deep seated the problem is. The Hypnotherapist will discuss your problems and expectations with you and advise you of a course of treatment.
